A cochlear implant is an advanced electronic hearing device designed to help individuals with significant hearing impairment. Part of the device is surgically implanted inside the inner ear (cochlea), while the external portion sits behind the ear. Together, these components work to directly stimulate the auditory nerve, enabling sound perception.
This treatment is recommended for individuals with severe to profound hearing loss in one or both ears. Unlike hearing aids, which amplify sound, a cochlear implant bypasses the damaged hearing mechanism and directly delivers sound signals to the auditory nerve.
Who Needs a Cochlear Implant?
Cochlear implants are commonly advised for patients with sensorineural hearing loss, a condition caused by damage to the microscopic hair cells within the cochlea. These hair cells normally detect sound vibrations and convert them into electrical signals that travel to the brain through the auditory nerve.
When these hair cells are damaged, sound signals fail to reach the brain effectively, resulting in hearing loss. In such cases, a cochlear implant can replace the function of these damaged cells by sending signals straight to the auditory nerve.
Parts of a Cochlear Implant
A standard cochlear implant system consists of two main components:
Implanted Stimulator:
This internal unit is surgically positioned beneath the skin. It receives signals from the external processor and transmits electrical impulses to stimulate the auditory nerve.
External Sound Processor:
Worn behind the ear, similar to a hearing aid but slightly larger, this device captures environmental sounds and speech, processes them, and sends the information to the implanted stimulator.
